It’s not at every fashion show that the backstage atmosphere is as vibrant and fun as it is out front of house. Sometimes it can be quiet, tense and busy. Giles’ AW15 show however was a melting pot of not only incredible models but a killer look to boot. With inspiration coming from both Deacon visiting the Chelsea Physic Garden and learning about its collection of medicinal plants, and also a fairy tale hallucinogenic world. There were ruffles, bows, puffed-out skirts but all in a sinister, almost demonic black and monochrome style. Everything was quite tailored, so almost Georgian in style, with Marie Antoinette looking extravagant sleeve cuffs and neck cuffs, too.
With Lucia Pieroni heading up the team for MAC Cosmetics, the makeup look was a strong black meets glossy burgundy lip with slightly hollowed out eyes and brows groomed to perfection. Using just a light base of the Mineralise Concealer as a foundation, Lucia set that with the transparent Prep & Prime powder. For the eyes, Swiss Chocolate and Saddle eyeshadows were buffed across the lid with sculpting powder on top to merge the cheeks and eyes – creating a seamless skin look. Now, the stand out, the lips. Using Ebony Pencil with the Pro Lip Mix in Black, and Pro Mix in Burgundy to create a really rich, glossy, full, tonal dimensional lip.
The models for this show were a total babe fest. From Kendall Jenner to beautiful transgender Andreja Pejic (who complimented me on my hair and made my entire day) to Lily Donaldson, Edie Campbell, Erin O’Connor, Jessica Stam and Aymeline Valade, I felt honoured to be in the presence of such charismatic and interesting models. Encouraging them to express their character, Giles explained that he wanted women with strong characters which is why he picked such a stellar line up. He wanted them to be themselves in a catwalk as he explained, “because i’m bored of seeing this homogenous bleh, you know, gorgeous girls, but all looking like robots from the same factory. I like to see what’s different about everyone.” Oh Giles, perfect.
So there you go, Giles taught us to express our personality, be brave with a bold lip and try out a milkmaid long braid down the back of our hair. Being creative, unusual and keeping your strong character on the catwalk that is life. I loved everything about this show from the look and the clothes to the atmosphere, the ethos and the general vibe. Giles, you’ll always have me on your side.
What do you think of the Giles catwalk? Do you like the bold lip look backstage?
